Seismological Stress Drops for Confined Ruptures Are Invariant to Normal Stress

چکیده

Seismic moment and rupture length can be combined to infer stress drop, a key parameter for assessing earthquakes. In natural earthquakes, drops are largely depth-independent, which is surprising given the expected dependence of frictional on normal stresses hence overburden. We have developed transparent experimental fault that allows direct observation thousands slip events, with ruptures fully contained within fault. Surprisingly, observed independent both magnitude its heterogeneity, capturing independence seen in nature. However, we observe larger, stress-dependent when area reduced, events frequently reach edge interface. conclude confined drops, thus depth-independent tectonic earthquakes may consequence their

Yield - stress Drops Guy German

The behaviour of viscoplastic drops during formation and detachment from a capillary nozzle, free-fall, impact on a solid substrate and subsequent spreading are investigated experimentally by high-speed imaging. Drop dynamic behaviour is an integral component of many contemporary industrial processes ranging from fuelinjection systems in combustion engines to spray coating, agrochemical and pha...

STRESS INTENSITY FACTORS FOR AN INTERIOR GRIFFITH CRACK OPENED BY HEATED WEDGE IN A STRIP WHOSE EDGES ARE NORMAL TO CRACK AXIS

After second world war, we have seen a very rapid development of Thermoelasticity stimulated by various engineering sciences. As we know, structures behave in different fashion under climate variation and the most responsible factor for these variations is heat which falls through and causes deformation of the body. A considerable progress in the field of aircraft and machine structures, mainly...

Properties of Dynamic Earthquake Ruptures With Heterogeneous Stress Drop

Earthquake rupture is a notoriously complex process, at all observable scales. We introduce a simplified semi-dynamic crack model to investigate the connection between the statistical properties of stress and those of macroscopic source parameters such as rupture size, seismic moment, apparent stress drop and radiated energy. Rupture initiation is treated consistently with nucleation on a linea...

Comparison of average stress drop measures for ruptures with heterogeneous stress change and implications for earthquake physics

S U M M A R Y Stress drop, a measure of static stress change in earthquakes, is the subject of numerous investigations. Stress drop in an earthquake is likely to be spatially varying over the fault, creating a stress drop distribution. Representing this spatial distribution by a single number, as commonly done, implies averaging in space. In this study, we investigate similarities and differenc...

Material Properties of Normal Meniscus: Stress Dependence, Interspecies Variation, Andeffects of Repeated Testing in Confined Compression

Introduction Assessing the quality of meniscus repair, replacement, and even tissue engineering approaches requires knowledge of normal meniscus material properties. These properties, including aggregate modulus (stiffness of the solid matrix, HA), permeability (ease of fluid flow through the matrix, k), and compressive strain at equilibrium (εeq), are stress-dependent as defined by biphasic th...
